Course Description

Students gain extensive experience in organizational settings including social service agencies, non-profit companies, and corporate environments. Credit can be earned for work in public relations, advertising, marketing, personnel management, consulting, and related areas. Prerequisite: permission of the Communication Arts faculty. Section C: HR and PR Variable credit: 3-6 hours.

Internship Information for the Employer

 

Thank you for your interest in the paid internship program for Department of Communication Arts majors at Park University.  This course is an opportunity for juniors and seniors to work in an area of communication, while receiving pay and college credit.  As a guideline, three hours of credit requires a minimum of 80 hours on the job. 

 

Employer Responsibilities

 

  • Provide a part-time or full- time temporary employment to a student.

  • Provide mentoring and guidance to the student.

  • Complete a supervisor work evaluation on the student (week 12).

  • Provide a letter of reference for the student, if appropriate (week 14).

  • Give the student a grade for his or her work--A, B, C, D, F--which counts 60% of the final grade.

 

Student Responsibilities

 

  • Arrange the time and date for the interview.

  • Provide a copy of an application, resume, portfolio, and social security information to the employer during the prospective interview.

  • Pass the interviewing/hiring process with the company--just like any other employee—and meet employment requirements..

  • Provide consistent, quality work 8-16 weeks for the company according to a schedule arranged between the student and the company, which meets the same standards and expectations of regular employees. 

  • Use professionalism on the job by arriving to work early each day, notifying your supervisor of absence in advance, having near perfect attendance, showing initiative, completing all assigned tasks, following the chain of command, being respectful toward all workers and customers, and other job-specific requirements.

  • Keep a journal, which includes a timesheet of daily hours and job responsibilities, which is submitted to the faculty contact.

  • Obtain a letter of reference from the employer or coworker, which you submit in your portfolio.

  • Write a reflection paper on the experience to the faculty contact.

 

Park University Responsibilities

  • Provide undergraduate or graduate course credit for the work experience.  80 hours of work is required for 3 hours of credit.

  • Serve as a bridge to help the student obtain an internship interview.

  • Support the employer and student in any needed instruction or negotiation.

Week 1 Prepare portfolio, show to professor, and take to job interview.  Complete any contractual paperwork.  Begin work as soon as possible.
Week 2 Keep timesheet and work journal.

Grading

  • Portfolio for job interview (due Friday of week 1). 5%

  • Submit progress reports with time sheets to Dr Aitken (due Monday of weeks 4, 8, 12, and 15). 5%

  • Copy of supervisor's evaluation (due Monday of week 12). 5%

  • A letter of reference from your supervisor or someone at the employment site, which you can keep on file (due Monday of week 15) 5%

  • Supervisor's suggested grade (due Monday of week 15).  60%

Core Assessment

 

The core assessment due week 12 is a professional portfolio, which includes journal record including time sheet recording hours and reflection.  Three hours of credit requires a minimum of 80.  This assignment counts 25% of your final grade.
