General Advising Information

If this is your first term, register for CA 500, which is an introduction to the program and academics in communication studies.  Although only one hour, this course has weekly assignments and takes considerable time.

If this is your first year, we recommend that you also take one additional course the first term for a total of 4 credit hours.  If you are just beginning the program, focus on required courses. The first year, we recommend these foundation courses.  CA 501—Communication Theory, CA 516—Qualitative Research, CA 517—Quantitative Research, and CA 505—Organizational Leadership, and an elective during the summer.

If this is your second year, we recommend you take these courses: CA 529--Cross Cultural, CA670 Measuring Leadership, CA 699 Epistemology, and CA 520 Organizational Change.

One 3-credit hour course per term is considered a full-time load for a graduate student.  Remember, these courses are offered on an accelerated 8-week basis.  Students can take a maximum of 6 hours per term, which is considered an overload.  You will want to make sure that you do not combine two particularly demanding courses at the same time.

Probation

Submit GRE scores, letters of references, and other requirements prior to full enrollment.

Program Completion Schedule

You need take one course per term, including one elective course each summer.   Then add in one extra hour your first term (CA 500) and an extra hour each term during your last year for the thesis or project, in order to complete the program in two years.

Syllabi

You can see the course syllabus here: http://www.park.edu/syllabus/list.aspx

They will not appear until the Program Director approves them.  Meanwhile, you can get an idea of the nature of the course by checking an old syllabus created by your professor.

Program Requirements

The overall program requirements are here: http://www.park.edu/grad/masters-cl-graduation.aspx

Tentative Course Rotation

We are a relatively small program, which means there is no set rotation of courses. We do seek to make all required courses available once a year in both formats.  In order to "make," a class needs at least 7 students, or it will be cancelled.
