1. GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Music can be a way of finding common ground or understanding a perspective of another person or culture. Discuss the music linked below. Do you think the music is typical? Do you think this music might be popular with a particular group? What does the music suggest about interpersonal communication? If a link doesn’t work, search the Internet to find your own example for discussion.

2. MUSIC

Many popular songs discuss principles of interpersonal communication. Listen to this music—or view the video—and discuss how this music supports or negates principles of interpersonal communication discussed in the textbook. If a link doesn’t work, search the Internet to find your own example.

 

3. PORTFOLIO

Write your answer to these questions in your own words.  Add them to your course portfolio as part of the course's core assessment.  You will need to synthesize each segment together into a coherent whole before the end of the course.

a. Define communication and interpersonal communication and differentiate them from other related terms, such as intercultural communication or public relations.
b. Describe the general nature of theory and its place in the study of interpersonal communication.

Explore the Internet--websites, videos, music--using the search terms of "communication," "culture," and "ethics."  What can you find that is consistent with the ideas of in chapter one of your textbook?

 

6.  MODEL OF COMMUNICATION

Draw your own model of communication.  What elements are essential? Is your model simpler or more complex than the ones in your textbook?

 

7.  COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Using a clothes hanger, thread, and paper, create a mobile that represents a communication system.  On each piece of hanging paper, write a crucial element of effective communication.  How hard is it to keep your mobile in balance?  What happens if you touch or remove one element?

8.  VIDEO PROJECT

You may find student video projects about communication helpful to prompt discussion and learning about communication.  You may want to create such a video project yourself individually or as a collaborative group.  There are many examples available on the Internet, such as this one Nonverbal Communication.

 

9.  LISTSERV

Join a ListServ about interpersonal communication.  You may want to observe or engage in the discussion.  You can write an analysis of the information and ideas discussed.
